Pat-Med’s ‘The Prom’ shines at the Teeny Awards

Over 100 students receive recognition for theater production

The cast and crew of Patchogue-Medford High School’s production of “The Prom” received recognition and acclaim at this year’s Teeny Awards. Each year, the Teeny Awards recognizes the best high school theater productions in the east end of Long Island. Ethan Moraitakis and Abigail Caravella received nominations for their acting performances, and 157 students were celebrated as Technical Recognition Honorees.

“This was a very special year for our theater program,” said Patchogue-Medford School District director of art, music, and cultural Arts Nathan Brinkman. “Our program continues to grow, and the directors, cast, and crew of ‘The Prom’ brought a beautiful story and message to life for our community. This is what makes the arts so special. It allows for creativity, expression, and storytelling by bringing different people and perspectives together as one.”

“The Prom,” which debuted on Broadway in 2018, follows four Broadway actors of fading fame who travel to Edgewater, Indiana to help a lesbian student banned from attending the high school prom with her girlfriend. Nominated for seven Tony Awards, including Best Musical, the show’s Broadway run and U.S. tour were succeeded by a 2020 movie adaptation starring Meryl Streep, Nicole Kidman, James Corden, and Andrew Rannells.

Patchogue-Medford High School’s rendition received community and critical praise while spreading a message of acceptance. Ethan Moraitakis was nominated for Best Performance in a Lead Role in a Musical for their portrayal of Dee Dee Allen, their second nomination for a Teeny Award. Ethan delivered a sensational depiction of Dee Dee, a Broadway star willing to pursue any avenue to maintain her fame and image. Abigail Caravella was nominated for Best Performance in a Supporting Role in a Musical for her portrayal of Angie Dickinson, a lifelong chorus girl who just quit “Chicago” after performing for 20 years.

Patchogue-Medford High School also had 157 Technical Recognition Honorees. The following totals of Patchogue-Medford High School students were recognized in each category:  Cosmetology: 44; Costume Assistants, Costume Designers, Prop Master, and Managers: 2; Dance Captains: 1; Pit Orchestra: 37; Set Design, Painters, and Construction: 10; Special Effects and Graphic Design: 3;  Stage Crew: 58; and Stage Managers and Assistant Stage Managers: 2.
