The Center Moriches Chamber of Commerce recently hosted a ribbon cutting for Empower Marital Arts, located on Frowein Road.
This is owner David Schnopp’s first studio. He grew up joining a local studio himself and eventually training others as an instructor by age 12. He continued working at a studio through high school until he went to Plattsburg for business, graduating in 2020.
“I started when I was a kid looking for the confidence. I didn’t consider myself an athlete,” he said. That is, until he started martial arts.
Schnopp is local, having grown up in Manorville and graduating from Eastport-South Manor in 2016. He now lives close by in Mastic.
The name of the business, Empower, he said, came from a brainstorm with his girlfriend.
“I think nowadays, people are more anxious and insecure as ever, and this might not be a good fit for everyone, but it is life-changing and has changed the course of my life,” he said of why to join. “If you feel insecure, try it!”
Client Jennifer Dodd said she has been taking private sessions a few times per week.
“With my 40th birthday approaching, I had decided it was time to make health and fitness a priority,” she said.
Though she was nervous, she said those feelings quickly vanished after walking through the door.
“Sensei David and his studio are incredibly welcoming, motivating and encouraging, regardless of your martial arts experience.”
She also noted that the space is immaculate, and the sessions are fun and exciting.
He rents the space located at 15 Frowein Road and opened his doors officially in May of 2023.
He offers martial arts classes as well as private training for men, women, kids and teens. He also offers training specifically for people with special needs and plans on expanding to holistic fitness classes.
The space is open from 5 to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 9 to 1 p.m. on Saturdays. Additional hours are open for private training.
