On Saturday, June 29, the much-anticipated Byron Lake Pool in Oakdale opened to community members of the Town of Islip.

Elected officials councilman James P. O’Connor (R-District 2), councilman Mike McElwee (R-District 3), councilman John Lorenzo (R-District 4), and supervisor Angie Carpenter attended for an informal celebration of the opening. A grand opening is being planned for July.

The facility has undergone major reconstruction to “enhance the overall experience for residents and visitors,” according to a town statement.

“The total renovation of the Byron Lake Park Pool is a testament to the Town of Islip’s commitment to providing quality recreational facilities for our residents,” said O’Connor. “I am thrilled to see this project come to fruition and I am excited to be here welcoming residents and families back to enjoy all that this park has to offer.”

The renovations began in October of 2022, which included the demolition of the original pools.

The Olympic-size pool is handicap-accessible. Serving as the current chairperson of the town’s Disability Advisory Board, O’Connor said, “The new Olympic-size pool is handicap accessible with an apparatus to lower and raise individuals with limited mobility into the water. Improvements have also been made for ADA accessibility, providing a fun and safe environment for park visitors of all differing abilities.”
In addition to the pool, there is also a splash pad, water slide, and activity area.

The revamped park also saw upgrades to the septic system and the construction of a new 3-Season restaurant, which is due to open later this year.

“I encourage the community to come out and experience all that the newly reconstructed Byron Lake Park Pool has to offer,” said O’Connor.

“I was happy to attend the opening of the new pool in Councilman O’Connpr’s district. Everything in the park is state of the art from the pool to the slides to the rest rooms,” said McElwee, “A special thank you to our Parks Commissioners for getting this project done in time for the summer season. Our residents have another great facility to enjoy in the Town of Islip.”

Lorenzo said, “When the renovation started in October 2022, I could not have imagined its stunning outcome. Byron Lake, is an incredible facility that will enrich the entire community for years to come, offering a beautiful destination for families to enjoy together.”

Carpenter said, "This state-of-the-art pool complex isn’t just about water and slides and a lovely concession area. It’s about bringing our community together where families have fun, friends catch up and memories are made that will last for years to come.”
