Brookhaven Village Association hands out awards at annual meeting

Four graduating seniors from area high schools were among those recognized by the Brookhaven Village Association at its annual meeting on June 19.

A $2,000 Virginia Brown Scholarship was awarded to Bellport High School’s Brynn Johnsen. One-thousand-dollar scholarships were awarded to Connor Murphy of Bellport High School and Lealand Stewart of St. John the Baptist Diocesan High School.

Johnsen will attend Messiah University to study health sciences. Murphy will attend the University of Connecticut to study chemical engineering. Stewart, who was senior class salutatorian, will attend University of California, Davis, to study pre-law and history.

Bellport High School’s Max Yablon was also awarded a scholarship, which will be deferred until next fall because he is taking off a year to volunteer with Americorps before attending the University at Albany.

The students were selected based on their essays about Virginia Brown’s love for Brookhaven Hamlet.

Stewart, who volunteered throughout high school with BVA’s Quality of Life Committee, was also one of two recipients of the inaugural Bob & Gloria Brown Civic Engagement Award. The other went to BVA historian and Fire Place History Club leader Marty Van Lith. The award, which is new this year, honors longtime Brookhaven Hamlet residents Bob and Gloria Brown.
