The Oakdale Historical Society held its annual March of the Scarecrows contest at St. John’s Episcopal Church on Montauk Highway last weekend.

Organizations and families from across the Oakdale community submitted their designs, with set ups taking place last Saturday, and judging and awards given out on Sunday, Oct. 25.

“The Oakdale Historical Society is always amazed by the creativity of the scarecrows,” said Oakdale Historical Society president Maryann Almes. “It is so wonderful to see people of all ages stop by to cast their votes and marvel at the ingenuity of the creations.”

In first place, winning $100, was “I Beg Your Parton (A Dolly Parton Tribute)” by the Russell and McManus families, which featured a depiction of the late country star holding an inflatable pink guitar.

In second place, winning $50, was St. John’s Thrift Store, with a spooky figure donning masquerade attire. And in third place, winning $25, was a scarecrow depicting Spongebob Squarepants fishing for jellyfish by Maryann Almes.
