Paws hit the trails in East Islip for a good cause. Nonprofit Paws of War held their Paws For Freedom 5K Run and Walk with the help of hosts Knights of Columbus Sunrise Council 6607. Proceeds from the race went towards Paws of War’s mission of “helping both ends of the leash,” aiding veterans and pups alike.

Kicking off at 9 a.m., runners raced around Heckscher State Park. Racers were invited to bring along their pups so everyone could be included in the fun.

The starting line was packed, thanks to the over 300 signups for the 5K. Racers’ companions large and small were eager to run, and their owners were ready to win.

First place for the men’s overall was Rich Strom, with a time of 18:21.97. Second place was Nathan Cagno coming in at a time of 20:09.61. Third place was Matthew Beierle with a time of 21:46.18.

For the women’s overall game, Jacqueline Whist with a time of 24:25:66. In second was Erin Kasin, receiving a time of 24:41:71. Third place was  Christine Ali with a time of 25:07.51.

Drinks were provided so all the runners and their pups stayed hydrated. With $30k raised for the nonprofit, the race was a true success for helping the community’s veterans and their loyal companions.
