The Center Moriches Free Public Library unveiled its new Community Garden and an Outdoor Children’s Area on Saturday, Dec. 6, with a ribbon cutting. Despite cold weather, about 70 people came to celebrate.

Construction officially began in September. The project was completed at no cost to the taxpayer.

In 2024, with the support of assemblyman Fred Thiele (now retired), the library successfully applied for and was awarded a $125,000 CREST Grant (Community Resiliency, Economic Sustainability, and Technology).

The Community Garden now consists of raised beds that are accessible to all abilities and will build upon the library’s successful Seed Library that has run for the last eight years.  This project, according to library director Marcie Litjens, also fits into the Sustainability Libraries Initiative, of which they have been continually working towards their certification.

“Today is not just the unveiling of physical space; it’s the celebration of imagination, collaboration, and community. It’s a testament to what happens when people come together with a shared goal,” said Litjens, proud of the addition.

Litjens said that the design’s architect, , John Tanzi, took an idea and turned it into a thoughtful, beautiful concept.

“His expertise in drawing and design allowed us to visualize what this space could become long before any construction began,” she added, also thanking library staff and Park East Construction and Bay Gardens. “This play area is a reflection of community at its best—children, staff, designers, and builders all coming together to create something that encourages movement, exploration, friendship and joy. As a library, we believe learning takes many forms, and outdoor play is one of the most powerful teachers a child can have. “

Margie DeCaro, head of the Children’s Department, also explained her excitement for the new outdoor space, eager to watch children learn and discover as they play.

“This space represents curiosity, imagination, and the joy of learning—values we strive to nurture in all of our young readers,” added board president Jacques LeBlanc.

Some community children in attendance had the opportunity to be the first to play.

“The new play area is so fun,” said Eloise Ceramello, 9. “I love the wheelbarrow and the tunnel. I can’t wait for it to get warmer and see things grow in the community garden.”

“I love the new play area! There’s a lot of things to do,” added Theo Ceramello, 7. “My favorite thing is the wheelbarrow.”
