Clippers come back with key players including quarterback Cipp

Bellport football has a lot of potential this season as the Clippers return key players, including quarterback Braydon Cipp and two of Newsday’s Top 100: wide receiver-defensive back Michael Frankie and inside linebacker Trey’von Holland.

“We’ve got a good group of kids,” head coach Jamie Fabian said during the recent National Football Foundation Suffolk County chapter Media Day at Ward Melville High School. “We’re a young team, but experienced as well. So, we’re going to lean on that experience and I think we have a big upside.”

The Clippers, who started several sophomores last season, went 4-4 and made the playoffs, losing to Half Hollow Hills East.

They open the season at Deer Park on Sept. 14.

Fabian, who is starting his seventh season as head coach, said the goal is to add another trophy.

“Our goal is always to win a county championship, win a Long Island Championship,” Fabian said. “We’ve got a long way to go, but we’re on the right track and we’ve got a big upside.”

The Clippers won county championships in 2021 and 2022.

On offense, look for Cipp to pass the ball to wide receivers Frankie and Daniel Romero and hand off to speedy running back Kingston John.

“We’ve got some good athletes, so we’re going to try to spread the ball around,” Fabian said.

Romero will be a key part of that effort, not only catching passes but also handling the kicking duties.

Holland, who played in the Rising Stars Bowl featuring top players from Long Island and New York City, will anchor the Clippers’ tough defense.

“He does it all,” Fabian said. “He hits, he’s physical. He flies all over the field for us.”

The Clippers suffered a loss with the death of assistant coach Sean Chavious, who died unexpectedly in July at the age of 47.

The team plans to honor Chavious in a pregame ceremony before the home opener against Northport on Sept. 28 and will be keeping Chavious’s memory alive through their play on the field.

That means playing Bellport’s style of physical football.

“We want to play hard and play 48 minutes and tackle and do all the basics and fundamentals,” Fabian said.
