The Rotary Club of the Moriches held its Scallop Dinner on March 14, at the Rotary’s Health Camp PaQuaTuck. Members of the Rotary Club worked hard to prepare and cook the scallops and serve them to the attendees. The turnout of the community was encouraging and funds were raised to help the Rotary Club in its mission to serve our great town and for community support. Everyone attending enjoyed a delicious dinner including fresh scallops, baked potato, coleslaw and a fresh dinner roll donated by Nettie’s Bakery.
Beginning on March 16, the Moriches Rotary will hold its annual Literacy Matters book drive to benefit Book Fairies nonprofit organization. The club will be assisted by the schools in our area: Center Moriches Elementary, middle and high schools, as well as Eastport-South Manor Elementary, East Moriches elementary and middle schools, Bay Shore Elementary and Our Lady Queen of Apostles.
“Book Fairies sources and redistributes books to underserved communities on Long Island, NYC, and internationally to provide equitable opportunities for children to learn, grow and thrive.” The books are donated to teachers and community leaders for distribution to schools and those in need of books at no cost. Many of the recipients of these books may have never owned a book of their own. Since its founding in 2012 by Eileen Minogue, executive director, Book Fairies has distributed close to 6,000,000 books free for the taking. The book drive will be held from March 16 through May 15, 2026. At the conclusion of the drive, The Moriches Rotary will then collect all of the books and deliver them to the Book Fairies warehouse located on Miller Place in Hicksville, N.Y., where they will be examined by volunteers for defects and excessive wear and tear, then distributed.
The Moriches Rotary Club will hold its next Stuff-A-Bus food collection on May 9 at the Center Moriches King Kullen parking lot from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. All food collected will then be distributed to local food pantries in our community. Please consider coming out on May 9 to make a donation of nonperishable food, toiletries, personal-hygiene products, baby needs such as diapers, and pet food. Monetary donations are also accepted and then used to purchase food and other items for those in our community in need.
As always, the Rotary Club of the Moriches encourages anyone interested in learning about our club, or better yet, joining and seeing what our great service organization is all about. Rotary is an international organization with clubs throughout the world with the same mission, “Service above self.”
Moriches Rotary meets on the first and third Wednesday of each month. Join us at JC’s Restaurant in Manorville at the Pine Hills Country Club. The meeting runs from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.
