Junior firefighters do spring cleanup for church

On Saturday, April 27, the Oakdale Historical Society hosted volunteers with the West Sayville Junior Fire Department for a cleanup of the grounds of colonial church, St. John’s in Oakdale.

“They have virtually adopted St. John’s as they come every year—usually twice—to do this for the Oakdale community.  We are so thankful. It is so nice to see kids that are giving back,” said president of OHS, Maryann Almes.

“Guardian angels were divine agents of God sent to protect and aid humans on earth in times of need. St. John’s Church has its own special guardian angels: their name is West Sayville Junior Fire Department!” said Almes in a public statement.

“This beautiful morning found its members ready, willing, and armed with garden tools! Their intent was clear—sprucing up the churchyard in their annual loving act of kindness and community service. Under the direction of Melissa McManus, these young people raked, weeded, mowed, scooped, and manicured every inch of the St. John’s property,” said Almes.

“St. John’s Church is bright and shiny and ready to face the coming good weather. These young people represent the best of the best,” said Almes.
