Surprise your love with a singing Valentine

You have all weekend to honor your sweetie with a Valentine. And then some.

The Harbormen A Cappella Chorus will send out groups of four in red jackets and bow ties to sing two songs. They’ll embellish their melodies with a box of chocolates and a rose. A personalized card to your surprised loved one will be included.

Besides wowing your honeybunch, an extra dose of good comes with this act of love: “Good Shepherd Hospice gets a percentage from the income of our gigs,” said Paul Miklean, an insurance consultant who lives in Stony Brook and is the group’s marketing/public relations contact.

The volunteer chorus also sings at Good Shepherd Hospice’s Celebration of Life services, softening the grieving process of losing a loved one. Miklean himself sings with the quartet called The Algorithms (two are physicists) under The Harbormen.

So why else should you make the extra effort to surprise a loved one?

“My first year with the group I was asked, ‘Hey, do you think your wife would be interested?’” Miklean recalled. “So I called my wife during practice and asked her if she was going to be home for the next half hour, not telling her why. We came in with our costumes and did it, and she absolutely loved it. I asked her, ‘Why did you love it so much?’

“And she said, ‘Because it made me feel special, loved, and the center of attention.’” (Pretty good. Are you reading this, Sweet Pea?)

There are 36 men altogether who sing under The Harbormen A Cappella Chorus umbrella. (It is affiliated with the Barbershop Harmony Society.) They perform their four-part harmony at nursing homes; Honor Flight returns at Islip Airport; memorial services and private events like birthdays, anniversaries or other celebratory occurrences.

The Mastic-Shirley-Moriches Library audience in November cheered them after a free performance; 50 people came. They also sang at the Bellport-Brookhaven Historical Society’s Christmas Party in December, injecting more merriment into the high-spirited holiday gathering.

Members include scientists, businessmen, writers, an air traffic controller, a policeman and others. That includes local Bellporter and author Bob Morris.

Quartet offerings aren’t all charming barbershop tunes. The Harbormen’s four-part harmony can also include Meghan Trainor’s snappy “All About That Bass.” They also do The Beatles, John Denver, Billy Joel, doo-wop and crooner songs. (You can probably get your favorite in there.)
