MBGC: Fall is here

Posted

Our club entry in the second district standard flower show, "A Social Whirl," which was held at Brecknock Hall in Greenport, won a second-place award. Rita Sepenoski, Eileen DeRicco, Lillie Brown, Betty Ronston and Diane Tuttle entered individual horticulture and received awards. Diane's entry, a black mamba begonia, won the grower's choice award. Congratulations to all.

Speaking of whirls, we have a whirl of activities going on. In October, all participants enjoyed Maggie Delboy’s workshop of a two-seasoned centerpiece. Members donated several shopping bags of non-perishable food items, plus 11 $10-dollar gift cards from King Kullen for the Thanksgiving food drive sponsored by the Brookhaven Community Center. We are starting our holiday toy drive now and will continue through Nov. 15. Eileen DeRicco will present a workshop on a Thanksgiving centerpiece and offer ideas for a creative Christmas centerpiece at our regular meeting this month.

Some members went to the dahlia show at the Bayard Cutting Arboretum last month and were wowed by the display—some dahlias were as big as 10 inches across and some as tiny as one inch. The dahlia garden is open to the public and is a great place to go in the fall.

Longtime garden club member, Dalida Taylor, has moved to the Carolinas. Dalida is mostly a vegetable gardener and always willing to share extra plants in the spring, so we will miss that and will miss her. She says that she and her husband will have two nurseries at their new home. Maybe she can ship plants to us.

Take a minute to enjoy the fall foliage in our parks and around the neighborhood.
