Comment period extended for Barnes Road project

The New York State Department of Transportation is allowing residents to give feedback on the proposal for a new exit at Barnes Road in Mastic for an additional two weeks, according to a DOT spokesman. The comment period is now open until Oct. 19.

The Affiliated Brookhaven Civic Organization reached out to the offices of Sen. Monica Martinez, Assemb. Fred Thiele and Legis. Al Krupski to get the extension, which was confirmed last week.

The project was announced to the community last month and would add a new interchange at Barnes Road. Currently, between the exit for William Floyd Parkway and Moriches-Middle Island Road, there is a 3.5-mile gap. This project would bring the distance to 1.5 miles, which is more common for Long Island drivers, who experience that and shorter distances on most of the highway.

The plan includes an entrance and exit on each side of the highway connecting to Barnes Road. The ramps would be constructed in an already-established right of way so no buildings or homes would be removed.

To send in a comment, email r10-rpic@dot.ny.gov, call (631) 952-6929, or write to the Barnes Road Interchange Project Team, NYSDOT Region 10, 250 Veterans Memorial Highway, Hauppauge, NY 11788.  All comments must be submitted by Oct. 19, 2019.
