A day of fishing for local veterans

Posted

A local fishing club will be hosting a fishing day and barbecue for local veterans on Aug. 15. Great Gun Anglers, the local club named after the beach, will take local veterans out on boats for a free fishing day, followed by a barbecue.

“Our intention is to honor local veterans who have given so much to the local community,” said Evan Goldstein, an organizer of the event.

He was inspired by a similar event he heard about in Florida, and decided it would be appropriate for this community, too. Club members will be donating their time and boats to take veterans out, and will be supplying fishing poles and other items needed. Hart’s

Cove Bait and Tackle will be providing bait for the fishermen.

The club is also looking for more volunteers with boats who would be willing to take veterans fishing with the group. The group will be meet- ing at the end of Union Avenue in Center Moriches at the dock at 8 a.m. on Aug. 15, weather permitting. To express interest, contact Goldstein at 914- 804-5875. Also, interested veterans are encouraged to contact Goldstein as well. All you need to bring is a hat, sunblock, and a good attitude.

“We just want to show them the support and honor that they so much deserve,” Goldstein said of the inspiration for this event.

The Great Gun Anglers are an active fishing club that hosts events once a month, as well as an annual shark tournament and bass tournament. And they’re always looking for more members, Goldstein said.
